5 Gas Boiler Maintenance Tips Every UK Homeowner Should Know5 Essential Checks

Your boiler works incredibly hard to ensure you have a warm home, hot showers, and the ability to clean your dishes.

So when your boiler breaks down, it disrupts your day-to-day life a lot.

That's why regular upkeep to maintain its efficiency year-round is important.

Below, we have put together a guide on how to proactively look after your heating system, including:

  • 5 essential gas boiler maintenance tips you can do at home.
  • Insights from industry experts on why preventive maintenance matters.
  • How to protect yourself from costly repair bills.

Important note: Boiler maintenance and repairs can be hazardous. Whilst this guide helps you identify ways to improve efficiency, you should always consult a Gas Safe registered engineer for internal checks. Ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector, a legal requirement in rooms with gas appliances since 2022.

5 steps for keeping your boiler running smoothly

1. Keep your water pressure up

Low water pressure is one of the most common problems with boilers.

You might mistakenly think your boiler is entirely broken if it isn’t heating up properly.

In reality, it might just needs a little more pressure in the system.

What to do

Check your boiler’s pressure gauge (whether digital or manual).

The reading should always sit between 1 and 1.5 bar

If it drops below 1 bar, you can usually fix this yourself by using the filling loop.

It releases a little more water into the pipes to repressurise the system.

2. Bleed your radiators

Bleeding your radiators is a highly worthwhile exercise to complete before autumn and winter arrive.

This is something you can do yourself.

Do it just before you turn your heating on for the first time after the warmer months.

What to do

Bleeding your radiators allows any trapped or excess air to be released.

Trapped air stops radiators from heating evenly (leaving the bottom hot and the top cold).

You should also check your radiator valves.

Sometimes they get painted over and stuck. Or they may simply be closed and need opening.

3. Keep your boiler ventilated

Boilers are often tucked away in cupboards surrounded by ample storage.

However, a boiler naturally warms up during operation and needs sufficient ventilation to "breathe" and work properly.

What to do

Ensure that the surrounding space inside your boiler cupboard is kept clear of clutter and items.

Blocking the boiler restricts airflow and can cause it to overheat or work less efficiently.

4. Adopt a proactive routine

In the boiler industry, it is a well-known fact that small details create big problems

Ignoring minor equipment issues can rapidly escalate into a costly emergency.

Industry experts stress that preventive maintenance is the best way to:

  • Avoid breakdowns
  • Improve efficiency
  • Extend the lifespan of your equipment.

What to do

Get to "know normal" for your boiler.

Do visual checks as often as you can.

Look around for minor leaks, listen for unusual noises, and keep an eye on your displays.

Additionally, remember that limescale and sludge are the "silent killers" of boiler efficiency.

(They can often be fixed with power flushes, but it's best not to let it get to that stage.)

Keeping on top of these small details stops your system from going into emergency mode.

5. Have an annual boiler service

The average lifespan of a residential boiler is around 15 years.

But that is usually only if you take the time to look after it.

What to do

Arrange for a an annual boiler service from a registered Gas Safe engineer.

They will rectify existing faults and identify potential future problems based on the boiler's condition.

September is an ideal time to book this service, just before cold weather begins.

Consider boiler cover

While the tips above are great for keeping your boiler efficient, sometimes a problem arises that you simply aren’t equipped to deal with.
